Promoting learning, local heritage and artistic expression

Welcome to the Southern Highland Music Foundation where making music is at the heart of all we do.  Our mission is to provide a broad range of hands-on music opportunities for the community and individuals.

SHMF is a 501 C3 nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the cultural heritage of instrumental music, song, dance and story-telling generated by the early settlers of the Southern Appalachian region.

Relying on a unique, interactive music instruction method, made popular by the Foxfire organization, SHMF students are encouraged to learn from each other and to explore their heritage.  This is the basis of the Southern Highland Music Foundation’s methodology and what has made our program so successful.

Since its founding in 2013, the focus of SHMF is to provide music instruction and enrichment to our communities through public school music programs and private lessons.  SHMF is supported by individual donations and grants from the Georgia Council for the Arts.

Join us on our journey to explore and preserve our musical heritage.
